More than 100 pupils of Kaptigit Primary School in Baringo North sub-county were forced to study under trees after strong winds blew off the roofs of their seven classrooms.
Head teacher Musa Kandagor said they experienced the strong winds after short rains on Wednesday.
"It occurred at around 3pm. We were lucky the pupils were playing in the field. No one was injured," Kandagor said on Thursday.
"At least 167 pupils, both in pre-school and primary section, have been forced to take their lessons under the trees,"
He noted the school's mud-walled structures are old, as they were built in 1987.
The head teacher said the school has never presented KCPE candidates because of "unending challenges".
"Parents normally move their children to Marigut, Torlokwonin and Kuikui primary schools for examinations," he said.
He added teachers there hardly stay for a full term before asking for transfers citing health grounds.
"The school has only four teachers for primary and three manning the ECDE section".
Kandagor noted there are Constituency Development Funds for constructing two permanent classrooms.
'We urgently need funds to put up the destroyed structures," he said.
Moses Kaplich, a parent and school committee member, accused area MP William Cheptumo of neglecting the school.
"It is shocking that this is the only school which has mud-walled structures in the entire Kerio Valley," Kaplich claimed.
Japhet Kapterit, an education officer, said lack of trees around the school is to blame as they are wind breakers.
The education officer recommended construction of permanent structures, relocation of the school to higher ground, fencing and planting of trees.
