Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Ambassador Ukur Yatani has been named acting Cabinet Secretary National Treasury and Dr Julius Monzi Muia his Principal Secretary.
The duo was appointed Wednesday in a mini cabinet reshuffle by President Uhuru Kenyatta following a leadership crisis at the National Treasury where Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich and his former PS Kamau Thugge are facing corruption charges.

A statement sent to newsrooms by State House spokesperson Kanze Dena-Mararo said President Kenyatta had picked Yatani to hold forte for embattled CS Henry Rotich and ensure smooth operations and continuity at the ministry.

Shortly after his appointment, Ukur Yatani addressed the media exuded confidence in his ability to deliver.
“I thank the president for the honor and trust he has bestowed on me by appointing me as acting CS for Treasury and National Planning and I promise to do my best in order to realize the dreams of transforming this nation” he said.
He said he was aware of the task ahead “I am alive to the fact that the task ahead is enormous and expectations very high on the part of Kenyans but I will strive to ensure fiscal soundness of economy by giving priority to areas that will support government’s Big 4 Agenda and realisation of Vision 2030”.
He stated that he was fully conversant with matters in government and the public expectation at the moment given that his appointment came at a time when there are issues that deal with governance.
Ambassador Yatani is the cabinet secretary for labour and social protection having been appointed by President Kenyatta in February 2018.
He served as the First Governor of Marsabit County from 2013 to 2017.
An economist, he was the Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Vienna Austria between 2009 to 2012.
His career in diplomacy saw him hold senior leadership positions at various diplomatic and international agencies within the United Nations.
At one time chaired the African Group of Ambassadors. Prior to his foray into diplomacy he served as the Member of Parliament for North Horr Constituency in the year 2006.

In the latest changes President Uhuru Kenyatta also appointed Dr Julius Monzi Muia previously the Principal Secretary for the state department of Planning as Principal Secretary National Treasury, replacing Dr Kamau Thugge.
Defence Principal Secretary Torome Saitoti takes over from Dr Muia while Maj.Gen (rtd) Gordon Kihalangwa replaces him at the ministry of Defense.

Rotich and Thugge were arrested on Monday and alongside 16 other suspects denied over 10 counts of graft related charges in the Arror and Kimwarer dams scandal. The duo was also barred from accessing Treasury unless accompanied by a detective.

Reorganization of Government
In order to ensure smooth operations and continuity at the National Treasury and in line Ministries following the Court Order affecting the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Planning Mr Henry Rotich and the Principal Secretary for the National Treasury Dr Kamau Thugge, His Excellency the President has made the following changes to the organization of Government:
(I) Hon. (Amb.) Ukur Yatani Kanacho, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, assumes, in Acting Capacity the Cabinet Secretary responsibility for National Treasury and Planning.
(II) Dr Julius Monzi Muia is appointed as the Principal Secretary for the National Treasury.
(III) Mr Torome Saitoti is appointed as the Principal Secretary for the State Department of Planning.
(IV) Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Gordon Kihalangwa is appointed as the Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Defence.
